If it was a jammer, it seemed mostly setup as a visual sort to disguise something. Which would mean the rare holographic technology of other species not human. Such technology was limited to only a few known types. The list for the team would be fairly short really there were of course the Xyrillians (OOC: Mem Alpha link here! http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Xyrillian ) first encountered by the NX-01 Enteprise before the Earth-Romulan war. The Klingons, Vulcans and Andorians were also known to have such though mainly limited to projections for the use of tactical training small moving targets. The last major known race also known to use such though notably for camouflage and distractions was the Romulan Star Empire. A tactic they had used pre-war to disguise drone ships, and during the war to confuse Coalition convoys into ambushes to great effect early on.

Given the colony had been a target during the war by the Romulans it might be they had discovered something left behind during that time for unknown reasons. If it was a holographic decoy targeted scans looking for magnetic variances in the region it projected should reveal its outline. Once located they could then use the phase variance to scan the spectrum to find the counter point of the projection to dis-align the projection field. The effort would need two tricorders working in close proximity to make happen and tuned carefully by both operators while doing so.

“I knew it. Romulans can’t keep from messing with us. We can scan to the disturbances that it must be causing and then mess with these.” He got up and had a look of pure hate and anger.

“Romulans? I’ve had enough of them too.” She pulled out her phaser and looked around. She did a quick visual scan before returning to look at the rock.

“I think I recognize this.” She said bending down to take a closer look. “The romulans and others, use this technology for camouflage, lets see if we can find any distortions.” She suggested, looking around.

“Right there by the waterfall.” He pointed right in front of the waterfall where his tricorder malfunctioned. “It must begin there.”

Brady stood and looked where the CMO was pointing. To the naked eye he didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. But he was a little old engineering ensign and so held his tongue in the presence of the CMO.

Marinna looked at where they were pointing. “Let’s tie our tricorders together and see if we can get a better scan.” she suggested hopefully.

As the group would link up their tricorders and begin to work together they finally found the counter frequency to dis-align the projection field. With a fading shimmer and small spark a 1ft cube green like angular box was revealed with two small vials of bubbling liquid dripping in periodic time frames out of the device! Pulling it out of the water revealed strange but slightly familiar alien markings on it......they seemed Romulan in origin!!

A scan of the small vials showed they were tied into a small replication device that periodically refilled them with a synthetic liquid that was the source it seemed of the flu like disease that occasionally was reported in the colony when it mixed with the local life it mutated into the flu stated, not lethal but in its natural form once exposed would over time weaken the immune system and oddly mental facilities of those exposed. More might be able to be discovered with proper medical equipment. The power source for the device was naturally the water movement itself.

No sooner had they found out all this but their comm units chirped.

“Romulans just won’t leave us alone.” Marinna stated as she heard the comm unit chirp. She reached into her side pocket and pulled out the small comm device.

=/\= This is Captain Barks, we’re picking up what we think is weapons fire not far from your location near the comm/sensor array clusters for the colony. Can you move to investigate? Some kind of interference is blocking further scans and comm calls..=/\= The CO of the Unity said.

“Doctor, will you be alright here?” She asked as she drew her phaser.

Marinna moved off at a fast jog towards the comm and sensor array. She was concerned that something was blocking sensors and Comm, which suggested more than simple farmers being unhappy that the federation was there. When she got close, she decided that she would try and get idea of who and what she was dealing with before engaging.
