The Vanguard reported to Black Rock at the end of her previous mission for a surprise: a change of CO, with Captain K'Mar being replaced by Captain Bahdria Sin.
The Van also received mission orders: to survey the newly-discovered Phi Epsilon system. Coming along for the ride was Lt. Cmdr. Ivan Borov-Ericsson, who had discovered the system on deep-space telescopy and would be acting as science advisor for the mission.
After an uneventful trip to the system, the Vanguard deployed probes to study the system's Oort cloud and asteroid belt, proceeding to orbit of the system's first planet at Lt. Cmdr. Borov-Ericsson's direction to begin detailed scans of each planet in the system.
The scans of the first planet were cut short due to heat and radiation stresses on the hull, and the ship proceeded to planet two. Scans on this planet were cut short at the CO's direction, who wanted to move on to the third planet, which was class-M and had signs of intelligent life.
Meanwhile, Sickbay dealt with an influx of patients suffering from a fast-acting disease that eventually left them comatose. They all mentioned having eaten breakfast foods that had been left out at their duty stations. The foods were discovered to have been tainted by a strain of Rigellian flu and a Gorn neurotoxin.
Once the Van entered orbit of the third planet, Lt. Cmdr. Borov-Ericsson walked into Main Engineering armed with a phaser, stunned half the duty staff and began blasting apart vital components of the ship's power supply and communications equipment. Main power was knocked out shipwide, and the only systems that had full access to auxiliary power were the sensors.
Captain Sin ordered a shipwide manhunt for Lt. Cmdr. Borov-Ericsson, who was found outside Shuttlebay 1, trying to phaser the door down. He succeeded, and before he could be apprehended by Security, used a shuttlecraft's transporter to beam off the ship and destroyed the shuttlecraft by detonating his overloaded phaser.
Before leaving, he tossed out a PaDD which was recovered by Security that contained a message stating his reason for doing what he did: he wanted to leave Starfleet and live a life in exile amongst a primitive civilization after his husband was killed in an accident two years prior. In addition to the sabotage, he confessed to the poisoning of the crewmen in Sickbay.
