Mission Summary

The Athena left Betazed and went through two Nyxian wormholes, the second of which had a quantum-splitting effect that left the crew dizzy and nauseated as well as damaging a few systems slightly. Exiting the wormhole, they immediately encountered a Romulan patrol group and engaged their cloak successfully. Sensors detected high energy readings in a nearby system that was likely the Omega-particle weapon they were looking for and set a course.

Meanwhile, Engineering worked on repairs and Medical was treating those injured. The Intelligence duo investigaed a lead into their potential traitor, and everyone else was combing the decks looking for those that need medical attention. In a thread that is part of the sim but now taking place just before the ship left Starbase 149, the med team is working on removing the neural chips without alerting the mastermind behind them.

The plot not only thickened but got downright dangerous as the the Athena was attacked while cloaked by Romulan ships after their saboteur managed to get a signal out to reinforcements. Badly damaged, the Athena fought back trying to give their repair teams time to work after losing engines and thrusters entirely as they were heading into the atmosphere of the planet. Sickbay was inundated with injuries, including some that ere life threatening. Suddenly the port nacelle that the engineers were trying to repair was ripped off the ship and the nacelle and engineers inside were sent hurtling towards the surface, necessitating their own dramatic escape. As the ship entered the poisonous atmosphere, the gas started entering the ship. With the attack continuing, including a torpedo hit right next to the bridge, the Captain ordered the ship evacuated. The attack affected many systems including transporters, turbolifts and fire suppression, and explosions and power sparks tossed in uncontrolled fires into the mix. The crew worked their way to escape pods and shuttles, with the CO and a chosen team aiming for the modified shuttle they need to use to contain and destroy the Omega particle that they detected.

The Athena met it's rather dramatic end after having a nacelle and the saucer ripped from the stardrive section. The evacuated crew headed for the Romulan-run station which held their target: one lone Omega molecule that was to fuel a weapon that would wipe out Betazed and the surrounding region. Though they had no ship, they were still under orders to complete their mission to destroy the molecule at all costs.

Reaching the station via their shuttles (the escape pods mostly converged in a safe spot out of the way), the crew battled on two fronts: one team infiltrated hoping to reach the control room and being the shield down so they could beam the particle to the shuttle modified with a special chamber that would destroy Omega, and the rest stayed in the hangar bay defending their injured and sticking together.

Reaching the control room, the team (that included Captain Koraia), encountered someone they weren't expecting: Commander Kars, the missing Romulan/former Borg drone whom they had originally been asked by the late Commander Varis to track down. Hooked up to the system, he fought to find his consciousness, though he required some encouragement and pleaded from the crew. Appealing to his true nature, they convinced him to drop the shield and help them stop more deaths. Kars died soon afterwards.

All that was left to do was get the particle into the modified shuttle and finish the task. Ensign Miranda (Belle) Harkness offerred to go. Not wanting her to go alone, and knowing that backup was essential to mission success, Ghubari opted to go with her, knowing what most of the others did not: that the destruction of Omega would destroy the shuttle as well.

In the end, Michail Reese, the Jr. CNS' brother looking for redemption convinced Koraia to let him take her place, and she reluctantly agreed. The pair were beamed to the hangar bay. Meanwhile, the station's system showed an unusual AI system and it seemed that their actions had angered some unknown entity. But there was not time to investigate more, as they needed to get off the hostile station and try to find safety, despite having only shuttles and escape pods. Also, the CO was seriously injured, but pushing through to complete their task. Having done so, she allowed herself to go unconscious.

The team was beamed back to the hangar bay and the crew made their escape. Michail and Belle beamed the particle into the chamber and moved the shuttle out to a safe distance before initiation the destructions process. There were of course no survivors from that explosion.

Moments later, a Nyxian wormhole opened and one ship plus a Romulan warbird came through. The crew then found themselves beamed aboard the warbird and on their way back to Federation space. Their destination? The nearest base to their sector of the Neutral Zone: Outpost 42.
