Mission Summary

After the events on Eleos, the crew was dealing with the fallout of Kallen Reese's death, and the one responsible, the Hopkins' XO, Commander Israel Price had been rather cryptic about details. He did, however, suggest that Fleet Captain Koraia knew something about it, which led to a rather interesting meeting between the two.

The Athena rendezvoused with the rest of the Exploratory Fleet and after the CO's met for a debrief, the rest of the Athena's senior staff joined the meeting. The Descartes and the Rokiren discovered a corridor through the Reese-Harkness Nebula that showed some promising readings, despite constant interference. The Fleet Commander (Fl. Captain Koraia) has decided the risk is worth taking and that checking it out fulfills their orders from Command. The Fleet decided to stick together compiled a plan to minimize the risks.

Continuing the investigation into Kallen Reese's death, The CIO discovered that things are far more than they seem. Reese was investigating the history of several Fleet officers, including Israel Price and she seemed to think something in his background was connected to potential security issues within the Fleet. It is very possible that her stumbling onto something ended up making her an unintended target.
The Fleet established its sensor network with the Rokiren flying under the radar, so to speak. As they entered the corridor in the Harkness-Reese nebula, they detected some ships heading their way, but the increased interference from the nebula made it hard to determine details. The ships then adopted a defensive posture and the CO was pulled info from her crew to help decide how best to approach the situation.

The Captain then engaged in a discussion with one of the ships in the corridor and discovered that the area is held by a group called The Consortium. A somewhat Humanoid looking being named Yelot is their contact and the bridge crew could see evidence of at least two other unknown species present on the other ship. In their conversation, Yelot confirmed that the unusual asteroid was indeed a settlement and base of operations. It wasn't clear what sort of operations they engaged in, but Yelot agreed to come aboard the Athena to meet with Koraia.

Meanwhile, an away team gathered to head over to the asteroid and meet with The Consortium's head of Science to see if they can learn anything useful to help them in the nebula. Naturally, anything else that could be learned would be of great value.

At this point, there were three main scenes going on: The Consortium base, the tour on the ship and the bridge. The away team at the base was interacting with the lead scientist and her 'speaker'. Sadja, being non verbal in the traditional sense, and Malia (who is of a different species and telepathic) communicated Sadja's thoughts to others. After introductions, they headed to Sadja's work area to look over the information that the Athena was interested in to help navigate the turbulent nebula. While on the way, the Athena’s CSO, Lt. Madison, disappeared.

Meanwhile, on the ship, the Captain continued her small tour of the ship for Yelot (the Captain of the lead ship that intercepted them). They played a subtle game where they are testing how much they can get from each other without giving it all away. On the Bridge, they are keeping track of the away team and monitoring a nebula on the move, which could pose problems.
The away team continued to look for the missing CSO with the aid of their Consortium guides who are in the dark about some rather odd goings-on. Elsewhere, Madison seemed to be subject of a rather gruesome experiment and it remained to be seen if he will come out of it alive and if his crew mates would find him. On the ship, the tour with their Consortium Captain went well and they showed him the marvels of the holodeck. Things were interrupted by the news of the missing CSO grouped with the encroaching nebula and the sudden departure of a ship from the asteroid base. Time was of the essence as the away team has been given a time limit to retrieve Madison or else they'd be forced to leave him behind.
The away team continued looking for their missing CSO and upon finding a locked corridor that normally was open, their hosts led them through some maintenance shafts to bypass the doors. On the ship, the crew was trying to figure out the odd behaviour of the random ship that left the Consortium base. The Exploratory Fleet split and the Rokiren and Descartes moved off to follow the ship, ready also to flee the area should the nebula encroach too much farther. Neither ship was equipped with metaphasic shields and could not stand the radiation output for very long. Koraia ordered the two ships to split off, despite the obvious risks of breaking up the Fleet.
At that point, the ship suddenly attacked, aiming for particular spots in the Athena’s shield array. A battle ensued, with the Hopkins doing its best to stay out of the way. The intensity of the situation increased when another ship entered the battle. With the two small ships targeting the shield array, certain emitters began to weaken. The first ship then crashed itself into the Athena’s shields, bringing it down in that section. The small ship then exploded and the second ship initiated a transport and beamed Price out of the brig. Consortium ships came to the rescue but it was too late and the ship disappeared into the nebula. The Athena could have chased after it, but Koraia ordered them to proceed back to the Consortium base to retrieve the away team.
Meanwhile, the away team found themselves involved in a firefight and Sadja’s interpreter was killed. They eventually found Madison and his experimenter, but she eventually escaped. It was noted that she had Borg-like qualities, though that was a detail for later as Madison seemed to have had some sort or organism forced into his body wherein it was establishing itself in some sort of symbiotic relationship.

The sim wrapped up with the Athena beating a retreat and letting their attacking ship disappear with Price into the nebula. Given that only two of the ships in the fleet were able to shield themselves against the radiation in the nebula and their path of escape was getting narrower by the minute, there was little choice but to leave. The away team beamed up with Madison and Sickbay continues to evaluate the strange experiment done to him. Will it be permanent? So far it looks like any intervention may kill the CSO. Captain Koraia took both that and the escape of Price hard, but they are returning to Starbase 157 with the Exploratory Fleet. There was much learned during the Fleet's mission but too much has happened and it's hard to say how SF Command will evaluate the success of the mission. Suffice to say it is likely the end of the Exploratory Fleet’s mission, at least for now.
