Mission Summary

Stardate 05070.2

Starfleet has ordered us to transport a cargo of live terran sheep to a freighter that was unable to make its rendez-vous, then assist in repairs to same. We are then to proceed to the Romulan Neutral Zone to assume a standard patrol. Command has picked up undisclosed unusual activity on the Romulan side of the border of late, and we are to "fly the flag" and observe any activity in the hopes of dissuading them from whatever it is they are planning.

Stardate 05072.7

While en route to the freighter, one of the sheep we were transporting was taken to the quarters of an Ensign Little Bo Peep, who was on temporary assignment to escort said sheep, where it appears to have exploded. Ensign Peep is in critical condition and may not survive. An investigation into what caused the explosion is under way as we reach the freighter.

Stardate 05083.1

After confirring with the captain of the freighter USS Lee, it appears that these sheep are naturally volatile and require special care and housing. The Lee had been prepared for such special care, but we had not. Why Command neglected to inform us of such special requirements is unknown. A second sheep also detonated, injuring Lt. Malik. He fortunately has recovered, and the sheep have been transferred to the USS Lee. Ensign Peep is in stable condition, and was also transferred to the Lee for further care. We are now proceeding to the Romulan Neutral Zone as instructed to engage in standard patrol-and-strut operations.

Stardate 05100.3

We have detected a small shuttle within the Neutral Zone, design neither Federation nor Romulan. Sensors show a single weak lifesign, species unknown. As it is close to the Federation side of the border, we have tractored it into Federation space and brought it aboard for further investigation. A team is currently examining it in Shuttle Bay 1. So far there are no signs of unusual activity on the Romulan side of the border.

Stardate 05112.8

The shuttle's occupant appears to be humanoid, possibly human, although he has a quantum signature that is out of phase with the rest of the ship. He has so far been incommunicative. Meanwhile, a Romulan vessel has contacted us from their side of the Neutral Zone. They have been investigating the destruction of a Romulan warbird and an unknown vessel that appears to have contained human crew. They have provided us with DNA samples, and we have confirmed that they are human-like but are missing key DNA sequences.

Stardate 06011.2

The Romulan vessel has crossed the Neutral Zone and attacked us, claiming that the presence of a human crew on the unknown vessel, and evidence that it destroyed the Romulan warbird, is proof that the Federation attacked them. They are demanding that we surrender the escape pod and occupant we picked up earlier. We have refused their request, and notified Starfleet. Meanwhile, the shuttle's passenger still refuses to speak but instead simply plays music on a musical instrument of some sort with which he was found.

Stardate 06030.8

During our standoff with the Romulans, their captain seemed to begin fighting himself then, as far as we are able to determine, ordered his own ship to self-destruct, inexplicably. We suffered only minimal damage in the explosion, but are concerned as to the cause. We have also determined that the alien we picked up earlier is of extra-dimensional origin. His musical device has malfunctioned and he appears nervous, but Counselor Sutor is trying telepathic imagery suggestion as a means of communication. Science and Medical, meanwhile, are investigating the possibility of using his ship as a communications conduit.

Stardate 06061.8

A mind-meld with the alien as well as research by Science and Engineering have revealed the alien's origin. He is apparently from an alternate dimension, specifically an alternate Earth, and was being persued by his own race for unknown reasons. Meanwhile, the Romulans were testing a new multi-dimensional quantum singularity warp core, which destabilized the dimensional barrier. The alien was pulled through into our universe, with the resulting spatial anomaly destroying the Romulan ship in question. As a telepath, he was able to remotely control Commander Sudalak and force a self-destruct in order to keep them from apprehending him. Although we do not know his fate in his own universe, we are preparing to return him to it through the same anomaly as he is beginning to show signs of dimensional psychosis, and remaining here would be a death sentence.

Stardate 06080.1

Although we do not know what awaits the mute in his own universe, we do know that death awaits him here from dimensional incompatibility. We have, therefore, sent him back through the anomaly to his own universe in his shuttle. Fortunately we were able to move quickly enough that the Romulans were not able to interfere. His chances of survival are at least higher in his own universe than here. We are now returning to Deep Space 20 for minor repairs.
