Starfleet Academy Report - July 2020

Whew, my final Commandant report of the term and of my tenure as Commandant. I do want to thank everyone who served with me this go around, particularly Owen Morgan and Adam W. who have both assisted me at various points during this stint in the job. I’m happy to see the role go to someone eager and I’m positive David will do the role justice. I’ll still be around, maybe not a named member of the department, but I’ve already communicated to David that he can bounce ideas off me anytime. I wish the new administration the best of luck.

The Department is in good shape, the Challenger is in great shape, which should free the new administration up to start revising a lot of the older material so that it’s less intimidating to newer members (particularly the courses, but some of the static pages could use a trim).

USS Challenger

Commanding Officer: Sarah Hemenway

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: The Challenger has slowed down to a much more typical pace. There have been AWOLs here and there, but for the most part, everyone has been posting consistently and enjoying the new sim that Geoff started off. We haven’t had much luck with new cadets actually posting, but that’s a lot more typical of non-pandemic times and it seems we’re getting back to those retention rates now. It’s still something we’ll keep an eye on moving forward.

Spotlight: Daniel Lerner has stepped in as super XO. Every time I think about needing to do something on the ship, he’s already done it. I managed to remove an AWOL the other day before he got to it. Woohoo!

Ship Status: The Challenger is doing very well at the moment. That being said, prior to our last round of graduations, we probably got used to pushing the Challenger to the limit. We ended July with six rostered cadets, two of whom haven’t yet posted. So we’re just below half our capacity for cadets on the Challenger, and I think we would all look forward to having a slightly fuller Academy ship.

We’re working on standardizing the initial mentoring process, especially with four new DHs. Progress has been made there.

The sim has been a lot of fun, especially for me for obvious reasons. I have a feeling my character will soon be relieved of duties - I’m sure Geoff will have more to say about the sim in his report.

Sim Overview: The ship has been racked with the discovery of a dead body in the XO’s hot tub! (Don’t let the GM read the specs of the Discovery class). Medical are preforming an autopsy, science has been doing the CSI work, while Security leads the investigation. Engineering is going to need to start cracking down on that computer data soon or the killer will escape justice!

Posting has been slower, keeping the sim from moving along at the brisk pace it did near the beginning of the month. I am hoping that it gets back to normal soon.

Spotlight: Our new DHs promoted from the cadets are working out quiet well and are letting the cadets take center stage. I am really pleased with them.

FComm’s Comments: The Challenger definitely has slowed down, things seem to be drifting back toward our normal retention rates. The sim though is a work of genius on the part of Geoff and certainly will do its best to entice new cadets to post. I’d like to take the time now to thank Sarah and her crew for really handling being the sole Academy ship. I haven’t received an email from the PDept with “We can’t place people in the Academy because of AWOLs” so that’s fantastic, I like not receiving those emails.
