The Meridian Fleet Report - November 2020

USS Viking

Commanding Officer: James Harrison

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 8
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: How is the ship looking overall?
Well I have just taken over as CO for the Viking and we are in a bit of a rut. I have decided, after discussion with FCOMM to drop the proposed charter for making the Viking and ALT-RPG ship. We are beginning a transition period from the previous supernatural/horror theme to a more traditional ship.
I am happy to announce that I have chosen Sam Stroud to come on board as my new XO and he will be starting shortly. He and I have some ideas about how to build back up the ship and improve on posting. We want the Viking to be a ship for character development and engaging writing. I believe I have a GM in the wings, and my plan is to have them start official in the new year. I am taking December to wrap up the sim that we never finished and we will also be putting an end to the current incarnation of the Viking and starting over with a shiny brand new ship!

What was my favorite moment/post?
I’m going to highlight this thread - https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf5/viking/posts/111984/
A good exchange from our CE Miha and also Melissa’s engineer character who had previously been turned into a ghost

One thing I’d like to improve - well there isn’t just one thing. I am working on filling the roster back up. I have some new crew coming on board including one certain duck coming on as my new Chief of Security. I hope to get everyone involved and write a fitting end to the current Viking

Spotlight: Everyone in the crew who is sticking with me and embarking on this new journey!!!

Super special spotlight to FCOMM Geoff for putting up with me and all my crazy DMs on Discord.

Vacancies: JOs in all departments.

Executive Officer: No report submitted

Gamemaster: No report submitted

FComm’s Comments: We had a major shake up in the Viking leadership this month with everyone of the admin positions being replaced within a couple of weeks. As James mentioned in his report they are going to wrap up the current SIM and then a new GM and XO will come in.

Previous to the shake up, the ship was in a rough situation. I believe these changes will have a net positive effect over all as we move forward. I wholly support making the ship “regular” again and withdrawing the petition for a Charter. Sharon has already been working with James for ideas on how to bring the overarching horror story to a close.

Short version: Ship was in rough shape but change is happening quickly that will turn it around.

USS Brian A. Olinski

Commanding Officer: Sidney Parker

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: New sim has started and lively action is ensuing. Lots of activity and involvement. We are rescuing the USS Santiago from getting in the middle of a Breen Tholian battle. Come on. How can that not be fun.

Spotlight: Luke Hung for stepping up and accepting the XO role. I am excited to finally have my 2nd officer in the 1st officer seat.

Vacancies:

Executive Officer: No report submitted

Gamemaster: Kenson Koh

Crew Posting Level: 9
Senior Staff Posting Level: 9
Overall Ship Health: 9

Sim Overview: The Olinski has been sent to give support to the USS Santiago which has engaged fighting Tholians and Breen in the Agol system. The USS Radical has also been dispatched. On reaching there, they find the Santiago damaged due to weapons fire and the Tholians warning them not to interfere. A ‘spook’ version of the ship was projected between the fighting parties. The Tholian ship moves away from the Starfleet ship with the Breen in pursuit. However the ships seem to be moving towards the Agolian homeworld. A team has been sent to help the Santiago and another team beaming down to the Agolian homeworld just in case.

Spotlight: Everyone has been very active in the sim moving it along.

AFComm’s Comments: I’m impressed with the Olinski this month (or is it every month). As per usual Kenson’s got a great sim brewing that’s gonna be quite good.

Really like seeing the 0’s, 1’s, and 2’s in terms of days since last post, and the 4’s aren’t worrying since the Olinski is known to dip just slightly like that in some areas. This month, great job Olinski crew! Keep it up.

USS Chernov

Commanding Officer: Travis Good

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 6

Ship Status: We are almost done with the current SIM and will start a new one after the Holidays.

Spotlight: Mwezi for being very Thorough in the writing and for coming up with the next SIM.

Vacancies: Need JO’S in all departments
CMO (Maybe)

Executive Officer: No report submitted

Gamemaster: Sam Pennington

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 6

Sim Overview: This sim is about a parasite. A being that boarded the Chernov silently and killed a crew member, while shifting the blame. It then moved to the Captain and manipulated him, before abandoning his body. A race of bounty hunters from far away came on the promise of removing the intruder. The operative question is, who can they trust?

I have to give a spotlight to Travis Good A.K.A. Captain Chris Taggart. I had to take an extended LOA and Travis was a perfect CO the whole time, and did a good job with the sim.

Spotlight:

FComm’s Comments: The Chernov has definitely slowed down in recent months and there are a lot of factors at play that feed into this slow down. After talking with Travis, Timothy, and Sam about this I think we have a plan though there is some discussion around whether the Chernov is a suitable environment for self-sims. I have been working with Sam (Not as the GM but as the GMDir) and Travis to identify what the success criteria for the Chernov as a self-sim environment would look like.

I am excited to see, however, Miriam W. stepping up and playing a bigger part in the Sims. I love the idea of a crew driven filler to get through the holidays.

USS Odin

Commanding Officer: Steven Sigle

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: The Odin is posting within limits for a ship of its size and crew even experiencing a holiday in the month of November and continuing real life events that impact the crew. As usual, Kenson is doing a spectacular job of balancing the progression of the main sim with the crew posts to it. There are several side sims and character pieces that have been interesting to read. First off there is a new baby on the way. Kate and I are doing a backstory in Ireland when our characters were young. The XO is off again this time searching for the little girl they rescued from the bug planet. The CE and CMO talk about life choices over dinner while the newest member of the crew is about to check in with the CO as Kate brings him welcome cookies. We do have a few AWOL’s but myself and the XO are in contact with the writers supporting them not only in their literary hobby but anyway we can to support the person behind the pen.

Spotlight: So normally I don’t do spotlights that have any revolving around myself. But after six years of pregnancy (I think) my CO and his wife played by the wonderful Tyra are finally getting to bring a bundle of joy just in time for Christmas. Hopefully, the baby looks more like the CNS than the CO. :)

Vacancies: ALL Jos

Executive Officer: David Shotton

Crew Posting Level: 5
Senior Staff Posting Level: 5
Overall Ship Health: 5

Ship Status: Our Main Sim continues with our wonderful GM running a good sim, keeping most everyone busy on the ship in some fashion. We’ve had some new faces join us, and a bunch of side sims underway that are keeping everyone’s chars developing.

Spotlight: Steven and Kate have been hitting a side sim with some flashback style development of two of their chars pre-Starfleet etc. Writing in this has been top notch and deep, with their usual style and flair so much so that they really are the stand out writers for the Odin in November.

Vacancies: JO’s in all departments

Gamemaster: Kenson Koh

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 6

Sim Overview: After rescuing a freighter, the Odin pursued what seemed like an unregistered Romulan ship. The Odin reaches a strange cluster of ships in a system that is not claimed by any major power. The ‘colony’ is an independent group of people from various systems and do not answer to any power. When the CNS tries to read the people who answer their hails, she discovers that she cannot read them, in a similar situation like the Ferengi. A meeting is set up where two representatives from the ‘colony’ would board the Odin to negotiate. One is a Ferengi male and the other is a female which looks human but is unreadable like a Ferengi. The CO meets with them and negotiates entry into the system to look for the perpetrators.

Two away teams have been sent down to the colony, which is actually a small planetoid. A suspicious person was seen and pursued. The away teams have cornered the young man, Wiz, who admits to trading with Starfleet equipment. At the same time, the ship has disabled a ship trying to depart, and are ready to board it.

Spotlight:

FComm’s Comments: The Odin is the star of the fleet this month. I am really pleased with how their story is progressing and all of the side sims that are happening. As Steve said there are a few AWOLs that I am hoping will get resolved shortly but that is my biggest complaint this month.

Good Job!

USS Saracen

Commanding Officer: David Shotton

Crew Posting Level: 5
Senior Staff Posting Level: 5
Overall Ship Health: 5

Ship Status: November saw a few people away with LOA’s and a few AWOLS as the American Thanksgiving time period kicked in, and of course a few other people had life to deal with in ways that most of us are likely unfortunately familiar with lately. As such, our posting rate dropped and the main sim slowed down a little. I have no concerns about it, life is life and we all have it from time to time.

Spotlight: Terry and Jennifer have been doing a thread with their two characters getting to know each other better, and our Counselor Miriam has been grilling our CoS James, or, he’s been grilling her.... either way, it’s been good posting from them in a month where much slowed down.

Vacancies: JO’s in all positions

Executive Officer: Jay Luistro

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 5
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: The ship itself is equally active in the main sim and side sims. However, as December month was coming, posting was slowed downed.
Perhaps there’s no need to justify such behavior and I believe many had their own reason to stop posting, making exception for the holiday season.
I, myself, am AWOL since a week or more for stuff related to school but still saw a good quality in posting.
Last but not least, I will not be making spotlights this months but I want to cheer the crew maintaining the Saracen alive even without its XO.
(I promise to return ASAP when things slow down)

Spotlight:

Vacancies: Positions for JOs in all departments are open. We also have two positions for swing officers available, CTO and COO. Remember to provide a character biography for approval (by me and the CO) if you want to apply!

Gamemaster: James Harrison

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Sim Overview: The Saracen has arrived at the planet Drixov. They are responding to an automated distress call that they were able to track to a communication buoy. They had been tracking my the buoy when suddenly an unknown alien ship appeared on sensors and destroyed the buoy. They continued to the planet which is surrounded by intense radiation levels which are preventing the sensors from penetrating. Transporters would be ineffective through the radiation. They are able to detect a comm signal that is cutting through the radiation.
In orbit they have found debris from several ships, the remnants of a battle. The ships are of unknown origin.
The Captain has ordered the crew to attempt communication with whomever might be on the planet before proceeding further.

Spotlight: Who was the biggest contributor to the sim? I have to say the entire crew. I admit that things have been progressing slowly on my end but now that we have arrived at the planet I am hoping things will start to pick up

FComm’s Comments: There were some struggles this month, however all of them are easily explained and thus I don’t worry about the health of the ship so much. There are some areas of improvement but I have already discussed those with David and feel comfortable that we are on a path to recovery.

I would also like to add that the Saracen is the only ship in Meridian, that I am aware of, that has decided to relax their AWOL limits over the holiday season. Based on the conversation I had with David I fully support this.

USS Sentinel

Commanding Officer: No report submitted

Executive Officer: No report submitted

Gamemaster: Robert Archer

Crew Posting Level: 5
Senior Staff Posting Level: 5
Overall Ship Health: 5

Sim Overview: Summarize the sim plot so far as if you were providing it to a new member joining the ship: The sim has just begun, the Sentinel is being tasked to go check on the Sigma III mining colony where they are reporting a series of murders they can not handle alone.

Who was the biggest contributor this month to driving the sim forward?: At the moment the sim is sort of on hold while we figure out if we want to retcon in the use of the new ship spec just passed or flip to it after this sim.

Spotlight:

FComm’s Comments: Dave and Joe didn’t file reports this month, however based on Rob’s observations and my own I am a little concerned about the velocity of the ship. I know there was a change in the the class of the ship that has slowed the progress forward however I would like to see things pick up again after the holidays. I have been working with Dave and Joe to map a plan forward.

General observations: We have seen the regular slow down during this time of year and other than the cases detailed above I think this is to be expected. Katy was slammed with real life but is back this month to help with the fleet reports. Expect her to take more of the comments next month.

A personal note, however. There has been some discussion around the health of the ships that bypassed me and went directly to Sarah. This is unacceptable. The chain of command exists for a reason and often the issues are already being addressed behind the scenes.

I have an open door policy, so please email or discord me if you have any questions or concerns about the activity within Meridian. Remember, DH–>CO–>FComm.
