The Pioneer Fleet Report - January 2021

USS Athena

Commanding Officer: Lindsay Bayes

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: We’re doing just fine as we await the new sim. Ian has had some RL things to deal with so will be kicking off the sim later this month. In the meantime, “new” crew are boarding and getting to know everyone. Our awards thread continues and on top of a commendation for the entire crew, several crew members were given an award or a promotion. There’s plenty of room for side simming, but we do still seem to be still finding our groove in trying to get everyone involved. There have been some LOAs and AWOLs, but nothing I’m concerned about or don’t know the situation behind.

Threads of the Month:
James’ antics as the new Chief of Operations is such a fun read! [Note: Hammor is going to fit in nicely ;)]: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf3/athena/posts/117378/. And Silke’s post after her JO escaped some drama on the holodeck is poignant: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf3/athena/posts/118877/

Into February I’m hoping to have more well rounded interactions from the crew as a whole and help individual players with character development if they desire so. I lost my own groove with my characters in the autumn and I’m really starting to get it back, so am wanting to delve in and make sure that IC things are happening for all.

Spotlight: In addition to James and Silke’s threads, there are so many great reads. Just a few are:
-The CO is getting herself into trouble with the CNS (and in front of a JO no less). Will she end up being removed from duty? Will the CNS and her have a rocky working relationship? It’s anyone’s guess.
-The new XO and Ensign Nazeen had hit it off on the Starbase and are getting to know each other more
-The new COO is exchanging messages with a friend in the Delta Quadrant
-The COS and the CO are on vacation and off to Betazed for something of a second wedding (only 3 years later, but do you know any Betazoid families who’d turn down a party?).
-The CO and XO are getting to know each over over a meal on the holodeck. Will the CO’s famous banana beef curry (albeit supremely reduced in heat) prove too much?

Vacancies: We have room for:
1x Sci JO
1x Med JO
1x Eng JO

We’re a large crew who can put up a lot a posts in a month. Drama, intrigue and suspense are the name of the game, along with high quality writing and character development.

Executive Officer: Miriam W

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: Overall the ship is doing fairly well, with a good number of posts. There are a few side sims that are going strong with a large number of posts, as well as several smaller ones. We’re in-between sims at the moment, and for being in that state we’re doing remarkably well.

Spotlight:

Vacancies:

Gamemaster: Ian Kerby

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Sim Overview: In between sims at present but starting a new one before March.

Spotlight: James Sinclair and Catt Bennett are keeping things lively for all of us :-)

AFComm’s Comments: The Athena is between sims right now but it’s definitely not short of some fun and entertaining threads to read. The crew are engaged and posting is within the normal expected limits for the ship. I’m looking forward to seeing what new dramas Ian has in store for the crew soon.

USS Atlantis

Commanding Officer: Kate O’Neill

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 8
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: So how is the Atlantis doing? Well for all that is going on in the world, pretty darn good in my book. The Atlantis is like life....everything takes just a little bit longer but it gets done. The crew is posting when they can and are keeping all the players informed when life is giving them lemons. By the way we have had so many lemons there is a free lemonade cart on every floor. One per customer and yes it is just lemons, sugar, and water. If you are looking for lemonade plus see Mike at Mike’s place.

The main sim is amazing but what else can you expect out of Luke Hung. He continues to post amazing scenes that the Atlantis crew is able to problem solve AND show a bit of personality. What more can you ask in a GM? So where are we in the sim....well the XO is the one holding the ship together but isn’t that what we have come to love about all XO’s. Jen is following in the footsteps of Spock, Riker, Ransom, Creed, Black, and Reilly. They are the ones that hold the ship down while the CO’s go off galivanting around. Speaking of galavanting CO’s....Kelly and company have landed on the pirate ship and our beloved CO is about to embark on wholesale scavenging not seen since the USS Tiger needed parts to join the war in Pacific in 1944. If you know the reference and the movie you get ten points. To claim the prize comment when the fleet report goes up. Yes there is a prize because Kate O’Neill always has an award for everything in her teacher desk.

Anyway back to the ranch with the piggys, cows and chickens....Kelly is in trade negotiations with Alfo and Shade. She is offering tricorders and replicators in exchange for parts to get the ship home. Jacen is working with the pirate engineers to install the flux capacitor because we all know that is the key to transporter technology. Ian is trying to point out that one can not give away tech because it violates the prime directive. Kelly is using a thesaurs to point out that give away and share are synonyms.

D’Vash is showing his expertise in the intelligence game by giving Kelly a pill that may or may not have her glow in the dark permanently but definitely will allow the Atlantis to get a transporter lock on her if needed. Medical may need to be notified that if she has to activate the pill because Kelly will present with all the symptoms of a hangover but not due to an adventurous shore leave.

On the side sim front, Kelly and Ian are in the lead in the Federation Bake off Challenge occurring in Hangar bay 2. Lexi is about to show her new boss a super cool vine that is indestructible and grows literally as you watch it. That is not going to cause problems. Revna is tackling a decision that quite literally will change her life. Runa and D’Vash are showing that while the North might be icy their post would melt any glacier in a fifty mile radius. Cue lemonade cart to the holodeck because it is hot in there.

While my synopsis of the comings and goings of the Atlantis is written with a hint of humor I can not begin to express how incredibly proud of the crew and their ability to write comedy, drama, and everything in between. There are several more threads that the crew is working on that are just as amazing at the ones I referenced above. Check them out if you get a chance. The threads by Melissa and Rusty are amazing and I hope to have more of them to share next month when life settles down for them. If you haven’t checked them out do it. You won’t be disappointed.

The last thing to mention is J Ridgley! Welcome back and just so you know we never changed the name plate because we hoped you would be back. I am over the moon happy that you are with us again. Jake is filling in for the CSO right now. Jay is doing amazing things right now in real life that are keeping him super busy. While we miss Jay and can’t wait to have our fun loving Kai back on the ship, please give Jake a warm Atlantean welcome. His writing is superb and so much fun to read.

Spotlight: I want to spotlight Nathan Derricutt on his solo piece about his character River Styxx. This back story is one that Nathan has been working on for a while. Instead of small posts here and there, Nathan is giving us chapter length peeks into the reasons why River is River. It is an amazing read and highly original and creative but this is nothing less than what I expect out of the crew. Keep it coming Nathan. Your story is amazing and I am so proud to have you on the ship.

Executive Officer: Gene Gibbs

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 6

Ship Status: We’re improving this month for activity and jobs and, to use a word enjoyed at my workplace, we’re getting some traction with the sim. With two teams running per se with an away team off to the pirate ‘carrier’ and us back on the ship trying to puzzle out these pirates and such there are jobs for everyone. While it felt a bit like herding cats at first to see who was where and get things moving I think we’ve done better this month for involvement in the sim and helping Luke push it along.

Spotlight: You know, I have to tip my hat to James Sinclair this month with his Gravel Mardusk Orion hulk. As classically glowering and gruff a personality for whatever reason he reminds me of the New Frontier novels with the Brikar Zak Kebron, and while I am totally mixing species here when I read his posts I am either picturing Hulk or Kebron in it.

Vacancies:

Gamemaster: Luke Hung

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Sim Overview: There is now a change in venue, the command staff are now aboard the Pirate Carrier and the negotiations are picking up. They Pirates want transporter tech and other stuff to fix the Atlantis. We wonder what the counter offer might be.

The probe that the Atlantis sent out might have found a clue as to where the Pirate base might be....

Spotlight:

FComm’s Comments: I’m glad that the Atlantis seems to be doing better than last month. I have concerns regarding some AWOLs of the senior staff but I have made my concern known and will be keeping an eye over the next month. The sim seems an enjoyable one and I hope that crew engagement with it is a pleasant affair.

USS Chimera

Commanding Officer: Katherine Dedul

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 8
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: Overall, we seem to have recovered from the holiday slump. I lost my COS/CNS, unfortunately. I have a list of folks that I just have to work through emailing to see if anyone’s interested, so I expect to have both positions filled soon. However, if you’re reading this report and are interested, hit me up! :)

Beyond those two key positions, I’m always in the market for JOs.

My favorite moment is actually quite hard to pick. My crew are actually doing quite well at digging into the sim and right now we’re wrapping up sort of the individual meetings (Gene has a host of NEs that he’s using to put us all on task). It’s nice to see great teamwork on each of the smaller parts of the crew as they interact with Gene’s character and learn more about the mission we’re up against.

Gene has progressed the sim more now, so I think we’re about to hit the main bit of action. Can’t wait to see what he has in store for us.

Spotlight: Christopher Logan for finding ways to keep himself busy, as a JO it can be tough while the DH works through a lot of the pre-mission stuff.

Vacancies:

Executive Officer: AJ Paulson

Crew Posting Level: 5
Senior Staff Posting Level: 4
Overall Ship Health: 6

Ship Status: The Chimera is just starting their mission on the Plouton mining complex. A murder happened on that complex, so the Chimera had answered the call. The crew postings have been spotty at the Senior Staff level.

Spotlight: J. Ridgely for becoming our newest member onboard. He’ll be taking the role of Chief of Security

Vacancies: We need Marines, and Security JOs

Gamemaster: Gene Gibbs

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 6

Sim Overview: Commodore Moll, Chairman of the Corporation and Fleet Subcommittee on Starbase 157, has tasked the Chimera to an area of space called the Scar, an angular nebula that holds several unaligned worlds and three Federation mining colonies sub contracted through civilian corporations. The Magnus Corporation holds the rights on Mining Station Plouton 9. Mason Larden, a lawyer for the Corporation is accompanying the Chimera crew to assess additional ‘safety irregularities’. The Sheriff has been murdered and the deputy is the principle suspect. The Corporation has requested assistance in investigating this murder and, if needed, help keep order there until the ‘law’ could be restored. Due to the political ‘instability’ of the region the Chimera has also been tasked to assist in a survey the region better, and seek out the USS Shogun which Starfleet has lost contact on. The USS Shogun had been patrolling the area to keep an eye on the region’s Starfleet interests there and provide deterrence from the unaligned worlds who were often in conflict and disappeared without a trace..

En route, the different departments were individually prepped by way of Mason Larden’s team. While Mason discussed the issues at the Station and the murder with the command crew, engineering surveyed new cargo that was taken aboard - large mobile replicator units capable of dispensing any volumes of programmed equipment. Science and Medical were briefed by Sung ho, who revealed that the planet had qualities that affected people not unlike a drug effect requiring vaccinations to counter this. Security and the Flight group were briefed by a woman named Regina who shared intel about pirates in the region and the patrolling required to protect the valuable mined cargo as they made their way from Plouton 9 to the Transfer station outside of the Scar.

Where we left off, they at last reached Plouton 9 and were in touch with the administrator there, Jane Hardiman, who related a number of needs that they had apart from the murder investigation.

Spotlight: This is going to sound rather like the Lord of the Rings Oscar ceremonies, but James Sinclair stands out to me in his portrayal of the CAG who is a prickly sod (well, to me) and captures the essence and nature of a good CAG and simply how James plays Krin.

FComm’s Comments: The Chimera seems to be in good health while coping with the reality that is this world. I’m glad to see the engagement of the crew in what looks like a very layered and intriguing sim.

USS Dresden

Commanding Officer: Joana Ribeiro

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 6

Ship Status: January saw posting pick up from the slower month of December, although not as much as I would like. There were a few AWOLs, but not in a number that would be considered unusual and they have been quickly resolved. Some family issues on my end caused me to be not as consistent as I would like, but as the main sim moves forward at a good pace, the crew has been generally active.

Next month, I would like to see posting increase to where it was before Christmas. My posting schedule is now back in order, I will be keeping a more attentive eye on AWOLs, and Ben is leading our plan to fill in our roster. All of this, as well as the current smooth sailing of the main sim, is hopefully anticipating some exciting times for the Dresden.

Spotlight: This month saw Jennifer Ward’s return as our CNS, and it’s been delightful to have her back on board with her amazing writing! This month I would like to highlight her returning thread, appropriately titled ‘The Return’ (https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf3/dresden/posts/119743/).

Vacancies: JOs in all departments

Executive Officer: Ben Z

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: Our DHs and JOs alike have done a great job this month interacting with the main sim thread. Everyone has a role and is performing their duties nicely, leading us to make great progress in figuring out the situation at hand! Side sim engagement is still something we’re working on for the Dresden overall, but there are a couple ongoing and new threads that are always a pleasure to read. We are happy to welcome back Jennifer Ward’s CNS character, Lt. Gadi, and we are looking to recruit JOs in the near future.

Spotlight: I would like to spotlight Kimberly Tenneson as Ensign Kerilah Winter for her extraordinary work in the main sim thread! She cracked the code on communicating with the musically-inclined aliens the Dresden has encountered, and has overall been a great addition to the crew. Kimberly has been encouraged to reach out to other ships to join as she transitions from a new member to full club participant, so keep an eye out for her applications! She’s a great writer and any ship would be lucky to have her.

Vacancies: JOs in all departments and swing positions

Gamemaster: James Sinclair

Crew Posting Level: 5
Senior Staff Posting Level: 5
Overall Ship Health: 6

Sim Overview: The Dresden has arrived at Julian Echo Station, but are now in the midst of trying to communicate with an unknown species whose language is entirely musical. Additonally, it seems that half of the alien vessel and the entirety of the station are locked in some kind of stasis field.

Spotlight:

AFComm’s Comments: Some good posting and character development going on this month for the Dresden. A few awols which seem to have slowed things down a little but not in a worrying way. I’m really intrigued by the idea of an entirely musical species so look forward to see what the sim has in store.

USS Ogawa

Commanding Officer: Calé Reilly

Crew Posting Level: 9
Senior Staff Posting Level: 9
Overall Ship Health: 9

Ship Status: 1-How is your ship looking overall?

The owie is doing well the second half of this month. We got our new ship spec and new ship and have had a lot of fun getting organised to get her staffed and ready for our new sim.

2-What was your favorite moment/post on the ship this month (include a link if possible!)?
A many but the two that stand out for me are these ones
https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf3/ogawa/posts/120171/

https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf3/ogawa/posts/119826/

3-Name one thing you want to improve on the ship for next month.

By next month I hope we have all settled into the new ship and our fan new sim, courtesy of the wonderful Geoff has started.

Spotlight: Jennifer Ward, Sam Pennington, Silke Fahl, J Ridgley, Matt Evans, Russell Watt, Brian Richards, River C.

Vacancies: None roster full

Executive Officer: Lindsay Bayes

Crew Posting Level: 9
Senior Staff Posting Level: 9
Overall Ship Health: 9

Ship Status: The ship is on a roll! With the new spec approved and the Edict made, the crew is now playing with their new toy, though we’ve told them to mind the paint. The department heads are getting themselves sorted, though some are posting more than others. Still, the JOs seem to be happily going along. We’ve added to the crew recently too and there are some really wonderful threads happening.

Spotlight: My top kudos go to Cale, not only for jumping in with all the crew but also for playing the new ship’s AI, GALEN and also the irrepressible Ensign Charlie from HR. It’s been super fun to read all the interactions.

Also two thumbs up to Jake and everyone involved in the threads surrounding his Trill character becoming unexpectedly joined. It’s going to be interesting to see how that story develops.

Vacancies:

Gamemaster: Geoff Joosten

Crew Posting Level: 9
Senior Staff Posting Level: 9
Overall Ship Health: 9

Sim Overview: 1- Summarize the sim plot so far as if you were providing it to a new member joining the ship.
We are between sims at the moment while Cale and Linds get to unwrap their new shinny. Hopefully the next one will start soon!

2- Who was the biggest contributor this month to driving the sim forward?
Cale and Linds have definitely had a lot of fun with the side sim thing so props to them!

Spotlight:

FComm’s Comments: I just have to say holy crap. The crew engagement on the Ogawa has been insane after the ship spec was finalized and everyone got to check out the new digs. There was a little concern as activity levels dropped before this happened, but I’m very glad to see what has occurred since.

Outpost 42

Commanding Officer: Adam W.

Crew Posting Level: 2
Senior Staff Posting Level: 3
Overall Ship Health: 3

Ship Status: There was a little more activity this month on the Outpost than in December, but not by much. There’s the main sim and not a whole lot else going on. More hands-on leadership will be required in early February to drum up our members to be active. The Outpost is supposed to be slow, but there should be more people posting content than there has been.

Spotlight: Liam. He’s been more active this month as well as the last several months than he used to be. I don’t really feel like we’ve been stuck waiting on the GM like had been the case. The main sim keeps chugging along, which is pretty huge when the side sim activity is quiet.

Vacancies: COO

Executive Officer: Kate O’Neill

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 8
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: So how is the Outpost doing? Well to be honest the ship is not moving at all..why....because it is a starbase. Get it :) Starbases don’t move because they are stationary…(crickets as no one snickers at Kate’s hadHow is the joke). All fun aside lets get down to business. The Outpost is doing well for all that is going on in the world. People are posting when they can and are keeping all the players informed when life is giving them lemons. The GM is posting but the sim is moving slower because the crew is moving slower. The Outpost is like life....everything takes just a little bit longer but it gets done.

In the main sim we are talking to the Romulan subcommander and trying to decipher the message we heard right before it blew up. The Captain is coming down to the brig to talk with the guests there. Tenkiller and Jessica are playing rocks, paper, scissors to take lead on telling the Captain on what is happening. Tenkiller three a rock but Jessica threw paper so pip for the win....Tenkiller gets to explain the tactical approach they used. James Sinclair....you are welcome :)

Toveka and Baldur are heading down to meet the Captain with the artifact “ie: dohickey”. I guess that means a line is forming to the right to meet up with Mathias.

In side sim news Nate and Chloe are hoping to get through dinner before the baby comes but with the in laws causing a ruckus Nate may induce labor just to get some peace and quiet.

Aedan and Jessica are hip dip taking over a mob casino. Luckily no Starfleet property was used in the take over so no paperwork needs to be filed.

Side Sim - Is there a Klingon word for ‘help’....is just starting and depending on how the meeting goes just remember there is a Starfleet word for help....it is Evie McGarrett. Like all good moms she is only a comm call away Mathias.

Spotlight: Melissa Aragon. I am so excited to read this new side sim. I love her Klingon....okay lets be honest anything she writes is golden …so keep it coming Mel. I need some good reading for when I curl up each night with my coffee and PJ’s.

Vacancies:

Gamemaster: Liam Schoepp

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Sim Overview: INVASION, the brave members of the outpost are pushing back mysterious
invaders dressed in gold armour. With the enemy ship disabled by the
explosion of a Romulan Warbird, and the assistance of a time misplaced
genius, maybe the crew will finally be able to solve this incident
once and for all…

Spotlight: James Sinclair as our COS really helped keep things going in the cargo
bay, and also helped save the Outpost from a giant gold spear ship.
Great work!

AFComm’s Comments: I’m mildly concerned about the differences between reports for the outpost. There seems to be some bursts of activity as mentioned but otherwise engagement seems to have remained slower than the crew would like. It’s glad things have picked up a bit and have no doubt with a new month and a renewed lease on activity as Adam suggests the outpost will be improving again.
