Starfleet Academy Report - September 2022

Overall the Academy is doing well. I have started a discussion on the much awaited updates to the Academy textbook on the Campus boards. Right now we are talking about the mechanics of updating the courses with Cale’s brilliant drafts. If you are interested in the courses and talking about the direction we want to go in regards to them, please do weigh in (https://www.star-fleet.com/core/acad/campus/posts/187106/).

Once we have a framework for how the Academy textbook will work going forward, we can start to update the courses and get into discussing the contents of each course and whatnot. I mainly want a system that is easy to maintain and handover when the Commandant changes.

Also, if you are interested in learning more about the Academy from a Commandant’s perspective, I’m interested in hearing from you. One issue a lot of people see in this club is sort of the “same person in the same role”. I’ll be honest, I don’t want to be Commandant for the forseeable future, but I do want whoever is in the role to be able to do the job well. Even if you don’t currently meet the requirements listed in the CADET bylaw right now, please contact me on my contact form. What I’m hoping to do is create an email mastermind on Academy Commandant 101. It’s probably going to be just me emailing you a scenario (names changed to protect the innocent) that may or may not have happened in the Academy in the past and how I would choose to handle it. I will also go over sort of the standard paperwork that you’ll need to keep track of when you are Commandant.

Beyond those two major projects, I don’t have much to report. I think those two projects are going to be the focus for at least the next few months. I look forward to hearing from people who would like to get more involved in the Academy.

-Kat, Academy Commandant

USS Challenger

Commanding Officer: Steve Johnson

How is your ship looking overall? Overall the ship has been doing okay. We have a few new cadets which is helping keep the DH’s engaged. The next step is to help push them into the next mission.

I did have to take the step of asking Amanda to step down as XO of the Challenger this past month. She’s had a number of RL events come up that has limited her ability to post. Unfortunately the Challenger is one place where I can only afford to give so much time to help get those cleared up, because we do need to keep going at a decent pace for the cadets. I’d like to thank Amanda for her time and effort to date, and I hope things get better for her soon.

Our former counselor, Mika Jackson has agreed to step up to the XO position on the Challenger. Welcome Mika!

What was your favorite moment/post on the ship this month (include a link if possible!)?

Name one thing you want to improve on the ship for next month. In simm posting. It’s been a slow start to the simm, so we need to do our best to kick it into a high gear for this next month.

Executive Officer: Mika Jackson

How are the DHs doing? Are they all active and participating, both in the main sim and in any side sims? All of our department heads are doing fairly well. A new sim has just kicked off and Steve has been on Discord chatting with all the DH’s so that we can gain momentum in the threads. I will be joining him to ensure our DH’s are engaging with their crew and pushing participation in the main sims. There are quite a bit of side sims happening, mostly cadet check-ins and the interactions seem to be steady.

How are the JOs doing? Are the all active and participating, both in the main sim and in any side sims?I am very happy with the cadets on the ship who are posting! They are doing great. I am seeing some really interesting and typical character traits start to emerge. One issue I think we are having is getting them to jump into the main sim. We will be rallying the DH’s to get their cadets more engaged in the main sims so Lindsey can move them forward.

Who is the shining star this month? Everyone is a star! However, I want to highlight Gavin Burkhardt who plays Henry Rodier. I just recently had an opportunity to RP with him on the challenger and I enjoyed it. His character exhibits real-life traits and emotions that make you feel like you are right there with them. Great job and congratulations to Gavin. I look forward to other engaging interactions on the Challenger.

Gamemaster: Lindsay B

Summarize the sim plot so far as if you were providing it to a new member joining the ship: After being warned from his future self that his actions at Jupiter Station will have dire consequences, Rodier is working through the situation with the help of the CNS and CO.

Meanwhile, the stations COO is investigating the cargo bay where Ensign Morton was caught in the pocket universe and the cadets have bene invited to the station to learn alongside some brilliant minds in reseach.

Who was the biggest contributor this month to driving the sim forward? Though things have moved slower, Mika and Gavin have been on the ball with the piece of the storyline I gave them.

FComm’s Comments: A wonderful month for the Challenger, everything seems to be operating smoothly. The smallest of hiccups toward the end of the month with the changeover in XOs, but a huge thank you to Mika Jackson for stepping up into the role from CNS. Steve should hopefully have a new CNS picked soon (if anyone’s interested, please get in contact with Steve, he’d love to hear from you).
