Starfleet Academy Report - October 2022

The Academy is presently having a frank discussion about course delivery in the club. The idea is to create a system that is both easy to follow and easily tranferrable so that the next Commandant just knows exactly how things are managed and what to do if he or she wants to change things down the road.

Once we have a direction there (should wrap that shortly I think), I’m going to go into reviewing some very well written drafts of a handful of courses so we can start the process of updating the academy textbook. The current discussion is on the Campus board in the Academy fleet. The course discussions will be held there as well, I’ll post news items for those when they go live.

I’m also still taking applications for anyone interested in being mentored to be Commandant. There are no requirements for this mentorship opportunity, just an interest in learning more about how the Academy runs. Drop me an email or hit me up in Discord (I am not on there super frequently, but I try and check messages once a week at the very least). This isn’t an official role and it will probably be just me sending you a series of infrequent emails to explain a concept or how something works (or at least how I choose to do things and why I do things a certain way).

That is all that is new an exciting in the Academy this month.

USS Challenger

How are the DHs doing? Are they all active and participating, both in the main sim and in any side sims?There was a very slow period over the last week or so on the Challenger and most of DHs went AWOL. However, most of them seem to be back on track. As we recruit more cadets to the ship, I would like to see the DH’s stay active and if the main sim is not moving (we know the GMs need some creative time to come up with their twisted plots…lol) I would like to see them create side sims for their cadets and encourage them to develop their characters.
I am afraid if our cadets see their DH’s AWOL, they will fall into AWOL as well.

How are the JOs doing? Are the all active and participating, both in the main sim and in any side sims?Our cadets are doing great. We have one who is really active and posting some very interesting threads. I have enjoyed reading them and also engaging in one of them. It was disheartening to have to remove one cadet from the roster because he was close to one month AWOL and did not respond to emails. Also, there is another who has signed up but has yet to post.

Who is the shining star this month? There is a cadet I would like to highlight this month on the Challenger, James Black played by Jeremy Snyder. I think Jeremy has roleplayed before maybe on another site or in another club. He is very good at posting, my favorite are the links he provides in his post to give a visual reference for the things he is posting about. I have read his threads and they are interesting, he knows what he is doing and he will do well when he graduates and get the opportunity to join other ships.

Gamemaster: Lindsay B

Summarize the sim plot so far as if you were providing it to a new member joining the ship: The ship has arrived at Jupiter Station and the cadets are being sent on a tour to meet the talented researchers. Meanwhile, the Station’s COO is investigating incident in the cargo bay with the pocket universe and the Captain and COS are trying to decipher the cryptic warning from Rodier’s future self. What does it all mean? Is any of it connected? Time will tell.

Who was the biggest contributor this month to driving the sim forward? A big shout out to Mika for helping me keep things moving as she shifted into the XO role. Also, I love the enthusiasm from our current cadets and hope things will get more interesting for them shortly.

FComm’s Comments: No major issues with the posting on the Challenger. The command crew have any AWOLs addressed, so it seems to be smooth sailing in that regard, maybe not so much for the IC crew on the Challenger as they seem to be facing a little predicament at Jupiter Station. :)

I’ll have to whip the CO a little bit as he missed the report this month though. :P
