Starfleet Academy Report - July 2019

Overall a slow month in the Academy. We need to see more applications, right now I am actively considering whether we need to shrink a ship. The main concern from the personnel department (and I do echo it) is that with just one ship, the crew of that ship will need to follow the AWOL policy to the letter in order to remain green and able to receive cadets. So for now, I’m going to just monitor the situation and really stress that we need to see some more recruits come through, we have two active cadets on the Challenger (another two are senior cadets who are nearing graduation and likely won’t be on the ship much longer), which is concerning. Just two active cadets is almost not worth having any academy ships going and focusing instead on providing mentoring to new members as they just start off in the main fleets.

As Commandant, I will continue to monitor things and make appropriate recommendations to the Office of the President with respect to this.

In other news, the new materials taskforce is working away and we are generally on top of our mentoring projects. I am still looking to hire a mentors coordinator for the Academy though, so if you’re interested in helping us make sure new members and hopeful DHs, XOs and COs get the mentoring they need, get in touch with me please!

USS Challenger

Commanding Officer: No report submitted

Executive Officer: Steve Johnson

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: Overall the ship is doing well. The mission has slowed down a bit with a LOA from our GM. But things are moving forward again and starting to investigate what we exactly found on the alien ship. Hopefully whatever it was doesn’t take over the Challenger!

Spotlight: Ben Z for his great playing of our infected Cadet!

Gamemaster: Geoff Joosten

Crew Posting Level: 9
Senior Staff Posting Level: 9
Overall Ship Health: 9

Sim Overview: The sim goes well. There were a few bumps in the road as the crew didn’t go the direction I expected them to go, but such is the burden of being a GM. The crew needs to figure out what to do about the jungle on the Potterfield and then how to deal with the survivors on the ghost ship, provided they can deal with their decontamination first.

Spotlight: Julie Watts, Ben Z, and Roger Babin will make fine members of the main fleet when they graduate out. Any ship will be lucky to have them.

FComm’s Comments: Overall no major concerns with the Challenger. The crew appears active and engaged with the new cadets they have.

USS Endeavour

Commanding Officer: Katherine Dedul

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: We were fully staffed until my CE AWOLed. That being said, we are in good shape to receive cadets once my XO is back from LOA. Once we have new members that is. For now we’re slowly moving the sim along, just to keep busy.

Executive Officer: Melissa Aragon

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 5
Overall Ship Health: 5

Ship Status: We’re pretty dead in the water. Significant AWOL and late posters. But we’re moving forward slowly.

Spotlight: None stand out other than to say those who are playing are doing great.

Vacancies: Lol just about everything. See COs report.

Gamemaster: Gene Gibbs

Crew Posting Level: 6
Senior Staff Posting Level: 6
Overall Ship Health: 6

Sim Overview: At last the Endy has determined that they can squeeze through the thick asteroid field to get to the pair of prospector ships that had crashed on an asteroid which itself was hurling down in the gravity well of the much larger frozen gas giant that had given it birth. Some of the prospector crew could be beamed aboard. Some were too close to interference caused by the crash and failing or overloaded systems to safely beam them out. A rescue party is being organized to get down there to get them out.

It has been a long time coming but we’re in the thick of things now, or will be once the ship takes on the survivors.

FComm’s Comments: The Endy has had staffing issues that have prevented new cadets from being assigned. Those are at an end for the most part, with one little nagging DH position needing to be filled.

The main problem is a lack of cadets in the Academy which is a problem both ships face and partly out of our control. We can really just focus on the retention aspect of new recruits to the Academy and getting those new recruits to post within AWOL limits, which we are generally well equipped for that.
